Rings of Power

Information supplied by Josh Parsons

Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for the mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the land of Mordor, where the shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all,
One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all,
And in the darkness bind them.
In the land of Mordor, where the Shadows lie.

JRR Tolkien

The greatest Rings of Middle-earth forged by the Noldorin smiths of Eregion and by Sauron between Second Age 1500 and 1590. There were Three Rings for the Elves, Seven Rings for Dwarves, and Nine Rings for Men. Ten years after the forging of the Rings, Sauron created the One Ring to rule all others, but Celebrimbor perceived his designs. The Elves escaped the trap, the Dwarves proved untamable, but the Nine Rings ensnared the Men and they eventually became the Nazgûl, completely under Sauron’s control. Sauron was only able to recover three of the Seven Rings and dragons consumed the other four. The Elves were successful in hiding the Three Rings.

Any mortal who possessed one of the Rings would not die, but would continue living in great weariness. This, however, did not affect the Dwarves.

One Ring - The most powerful of the Rings of Power. It was forged in secret by the Dark Lord, Sauron in Orodruin. Much of his power was placed in the Ring and he used it to complete the Barad-dûr. The Ring was completely evil.

In Second Age 3441, Isildur took the Ring after cutting it from Sauron’s hand during the Battle of Dagorlad. Isildur’s greed kept him from destroying the Ring when he had the chance. In the Battle of Gladden Fields, it betrayed Isildur and slipped off his finger, revealing him to the Orcs, who then slew him.

About Third Age 2463, Déagol the Stoor found the Ring and Sméagol, later known as Gollum, murdered his friend to get it. Gollum then went and hid in the Misty Mountains where the Ring gave Gollum long life and warped his mind. 2941, the Ring abandoned Gollum and was discovered by Bilbo Baggins. Bilbo passed the Ring onto Frodo in 3001. Gandalf was suspicious of the Ring and after researching it in Gondor; he realized that it was indeed the One Ring.

The Ring was a plain gold band. The Ring-inscription could only be read when the Ring was heated and it could only be destroyed in the Fire of Doom where it was forged. It seemed to have a certain amount of self-determination, which allowed it to pass from bearer to bearer in order to get back to its only true master.

The inscription on the Ring was written in Black Speech and the script was Elvish, but translated into the common tongue it was: One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them.

Vilya - The mightiest of the Three Rings of the Elves. Vilya was originally worn by Gil-galad, but he gave it to Lord Elrond. It was made of gold and was set with a great sapphire. Also called the Ring of Air and the Ring of Sapphire.

Nenya - The second of the Three Rings of the Elves. The Lady Galadriel wore Nenya. Nenya was made of mithril and had a white stone with a soft, flickering light. Also called the Ring of Water and Ring of Adamant.

Narya - The third of the Elven Rings, originally given to Círdan. However, when Gandalf came to Middle-earth, Círdan gave it to him. Narya was the Ring of Fire and had a red stone. It had the power to strengthen hearts.
