A Study of Revelation Chapter 11:1-19

************************************************************************

Revelation 11:1: And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein.

************************************************************************

This is reminiscent of the measuring done by the man, as recorded in:

Ezekiel 40:2: “In the visions of God brought he me into the land of Israel, and set me upon a very high mountain, by which was as the frame of a city on the south.

3: And he brought me thither, and, behold, there was a man, whose appearance was like the appearance of brass, with a line of flax in his hand, and a measuring reed; and he stood in the gate.

4: And the man said unto me, Son of man, behold with thine eyes, and hear with thine ears, and set thine heart upon all that I shall shew thee; for to the intent that I might shew them unto thee art thou brought hither: declare all that thou seest to the house of Israel.

5: And behold a wall on the outside of the house round about, and in the man's hand a measuring reed of six cubits long by the cubit and an hand breadth: so he measured the breadth of the building, one reed; and the height, one reed.

6: Then came he unto the gate which looketh toward the east, and went up the stairs thereof, and measured the threshold of the gate, which was one reed broad; and the other threshold of the gate, which was one reed broad.”

************************************************************************

Revelation 11:2: But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months.

************************************************************************

It is said that the city shall be trod under the feet of the Gentiles for 42 months, or 3-1/2 years. That is about the length of time that Jerusalem was under siege by the Roman armies, under first Vespasian, and then Titus, as was predicted by Jesus.

Luke 21:20: “And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh.

21: Then let them which are in Judaea flee to the mountains; and let them which are in the midst of it depart out; and let not them that are in the countries enter thereinto.

22: For these be the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled.

23: But woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck, in those days! for there shall be great distress in the land, and wrath upon this people.

24: And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.

25: And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;

26: Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.

27: And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

28: And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.

29: And he spake to them a parable; Behold the fig tree, and all the trees;

30: When they now shoot forth, ye see and know of your own selves that summer is now nigh at hand.

31: So likewise ye, when ye see these things come to pass, know ye that the kingdom of God is nigh at hand.

32: Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled.”

Roamsn 2:8: “But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,

9: Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;”

After the fall of Jerusalem, God would then pour out His indignation and wrath upon the Gentiles. Remember the prophecy that we studied in Daniel.

Daniel 2:44: “And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.”

************************************************************************

Revelation 11:3: And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.

4: These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth

************************************************************************

Again, we find a reference to an Old Testament prophecy.

Zechariah 4:1: “And the angel that talked with me came again, and waked me, as a man that is wakened out of his sleep,

2: And said unto me, What seest thou?  And I said, I have looked, and behold a candlestick all of gold, with a bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which are upon the top thereof:

3: And two olive trees by it, one upon the right side of the bowl, and the other upon the left side thereof.

4: So I answered and spake to the angel that talked with me, saying, What are these, my lord?

5: Then the angel that talked with me answered and said unto me, Knowest thou not what these be?  And I said, No, my lord.

6: Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.

7: Who art thou, O great mountain?  before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain: and he shall bring forth the headstone thereof with shoutings, crying, Grace, grace unto it.

8: Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

9: The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it; and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto you.

10: For who hath despised the day of small things?  for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the LORD, which run to and fro through the whole earth.

11: Then answered I, and said unto him, What are these two olive trees upon the right side of the candlestick and upon the left side thereof?

12: And I answered again, and said unto him, What be these two olive branches which through the two golden pipes empty the golden oil out of themselves?

13: And he answered me and said, Knowest thou not what these be?  And I said, No, my lord.

14: Then said he, These are the two anointed ones, that stand by the LORD of the whole earth.”

John 8:17: “It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true.”

The two witnesses were to prophesy for 3-1/2 years, the length of time that the city of Jerusalem was under siege by the Romans. We see from the above reading from Zechariah 4, that the truth is that the spiritual word and will of God win out over the might and the will of kings and generals. They prophesied while in sackcloth, which denotes that they were in mourning for the calamity that was to come.

Some believe the two witnesses to be Moses and Elijah. When one considers that both Moses, representing the Law of Moses, and Elijah, representing the prophets, worked miracles and spoke for God, there may be some credence to that idea. Moses turned water to blood, while Elijah prayed for drought, and it came.

After all, Jesus said that He came to fulfill all the law and prophets.

John 5:39: “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.”

Matthew 5:17: “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.”

The apostles preached Jesus as Savior of the world, using the Law and the Prophets as the scriptures from which they quoted.

Acts: 24:14: “But this I confess unto thee, that after the way which they call heresy, so worship I the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets:”

Acts: 28:23: “And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening.”

These were the two seen speaking with Jesus in the mountain.

Matthew 17:1: “And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart,

2: And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.

3: And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him.

4: Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.

5: While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.”

If the two witnesses indeed be the Law and the Prophets, it could be said that they died with the destruction of the temple and Jerusalem, but were resurrected in Christianity.

There is no clear indication of who the witnesses actually were. At any rate, in Zechariah 4, the message seems to be that the golden oil is the word of God, which, when supplied to the candlesticks, lights the world. We see the same thing in the Revelation to John. The purpose of a candlestick is to give light. In the Bible times, olive oil was the fuel that kept the light burning.

Matthew 5:14: “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

15: Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

16: Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

John 1:1: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2: The same was in the beginning with God.

3: All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

4: In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

5: And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

6: There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

7: The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.

8: He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

9: That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.”

The two witnesses preach the gospel of Jesus Christ.

************************************************************************

Revelation 11:5: And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed.

6: These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will.

************************************************************************

The fire that proceeds from their mouth is the word of God.

Jeremiah 5:14: “Wherefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them.

15: Lo, I will bring a nation upon you from far, O house of Israel, saith the LORD: it is a mighty nation, it is an ancient nation, a nation whose language thou knowest not, neither understandest what they say.”

Jeremiah 23:28: “The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream; and he that hath my word, let him speak my word faithfully.  What is the chaff to the wheat?  saith the LORD.

29: Is not my word like as a fire?  saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?”

Isaiah 10:17: “And the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame: and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day;”

John 12:48: “He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.”

These righteous witnesses had the authority to petition God regarding their enemies.

1 Peter 3:12: “For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.”

James 5:16: “Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

17: Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months.

18: And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.”

Mark 11:22: “And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God.

23: For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.

24: Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.”

************************************************************************

Revelation 11:7: And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.

8: And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.

************************************************************************

The two witnesses are killed by the beast that comes from the bottomless pit. We saw from studying Daniel that the four great beasts of the vision were empires. The Roman Empire was the fourth great beast. The bottomless pit, or the abyss, represents the destructive force that causes death. Remember that The Destroyer was unleashed from the bottomless pit. The Roman armies unleashed destruction upon Jerusalem, Judæa, and all of Rome’s enemies.

Matthew 24:6: “And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

7: For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.

8: All these are the beginning of sorrows.

9: Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake.

10: And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.

11: And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.

12: And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.

13: But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

14: And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.”

Revelation 2:10: “Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.”

What city could be spiritually called Sodom and Egypt? What were the grievous sins of Sodom? Sodom was destroyed for condoning homosexuality.

Babylon, the first great empire of the vision in Daniel, is compared to Sodom.

Isaiah 13:13: “Therefore I will shake the heavens, and the earth shall remove out of her place, in the wrath of the LORD of hosts, and in the day of his fierce anger.”

Isaiah 13:19: “And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldees' excellency, shall be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.”

Judah was also referred to as Sodom, and Jerusalem as a harlot.

Isaiah 1:1: “The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.”

Isaiah 1:8: “And the daughter of Zion is left as a cottage in a vineyard, as a lodge in a garden of cucumbers, as a besieged city.

9: Except the LORD of hosts had left unto us a very small remnant, we should have been as Sodom, and we should have been like unto Gomorrah.

10: Hear the word of the LORD, ye rulers of Sodom; give ear unto the law of our God, ye people of Gomorrah.”

Isaiah 1:21: “How is the faithful city become an harlot!  it was full of judgment; righteousness lodged in it; but now murderers.

22: Thy silver is become dross, thy wine mixed with water:

23: Thy princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves: every one loveth gifts, and followeth after rewards: they judge not the fatherless, neither doth the cause of the widow come unto them.”

Jeremiah 23:14: “I have seen also in the prophets of Jerusalem an horrible thing: they commit adultery, and walk in lies: they strengthen also the hands of evildoers, that none doth return from his wickedness: they are all of them unto me as Sodom, and the inhabitants thereof as Gomorrah.”

What about Egypt?

Isaiah 19:1: “The burden of Egypt.  Behold, the LORD rideth upon a swift cloud, and shall come into Egypt: and the idols of Egypt shall be moved at his presence, and the heart of Egypt shall melt in the midst of it.

2: And I will set the Egyptians against the Egyptians: and they shall fight every one against his brother, and every one against his neighbour; city against city, and kingdom against kingdom.

3: And the spirit of Egypt shall fail in the midst thereof; and I will destroy the counsel thereof: and they shall seek to the idols, and to the charmers, and to them that have familiar spirits, and to the wizards.”

So, Jerusalem can be said to be a spiritual Sodom and Egypt, because they were in league with Rome, where homosexuality abounded and idol worship was the state religion. Or, the Roman Empire itself can spiritually be described as Sodom and Egypt.

In verse 6, “where also our Lord was crucified” seems to clinch that Jerusalem is being described as the place where the two witnesses died. Yet, by God’s own design, both Jerusalem and Rome had a hand in the crucifixion of our Lord.

Luke 24:19: “And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:

20: And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him.”

John 19:14: “And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!

15: But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.

16: Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.

17: And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:

18: Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.”

Mark 15:16: “And the soldiers led him away into the hall, called Praetorium; and they call together the whole band.

17: And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his head,

18: And began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews!

19: And they smote him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him, and bowing their knees worshipped him.

20: And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him out to crucify him.

21: And they compel one Simon a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear his cross.

22: And they bring him unto the place Golgotha, which is, being interpreted, The place of a skull.

23: And they gave him to drink wine mingled with myrrh: but he received it not.

24: And when they had crucified him, they parted his garments, casting lots upon them, what every man should take.

25: And it was the third hour, and they crucified him.”

Acts2:23: “Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:”

Acts:2:36: “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.”

Acts:13:28: ”And though they found no cause of death in him, yet desired they Pilate that he should be slain.”

Matthew 27:58: “He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered.”

John 18:31: “Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:

32: That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die.”

Acts 4:26: “The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ.

27: For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together,

28: For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done.”

The Lord was crucified outside the city proper of Jerusalem, and not in it. He was killed by the Romans at the request and insistence of the Jews. So, I ask, “Is Jerusalem the city in question here, or is it Rome?” Either may rightfully be called a spiritual Sodom, or Egypt, and each was equally responsible for the death of our Lord Jesus. Yet Egypt was a land of idol-worshippers.

************************************************************************

Revelation 11:9: And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves.

10: And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth.

************************************************************************

The dead bodies of the two witnesses were desecrated by not being buried. Instead, people celebrated their deaths, because they had been tormented by the two prophets. I might note at this time that the Romans under Emperor Nero, and later under Domitian, persecuted and executed Jews and Christians.

************************************************************************

Revelation 11:11: And after three days and an half the Spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them.

12: And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them, Come up hither. And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud; and their enemies beheld them.

13: And the same hour was there a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand: and the remnant were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven.

************************************************************************

I am not certain if it is significant, but the tense of the story switches from future to past. Up to this point in this part of the vision, are told things that shall happen. Beginning with verse 11, the language speaks of things as though they have already happened. The two dead witnesses were resurrected, after which they were called, and ascended to heaven, while their enemies watched.

Is the earthquake actual, or does it refer to war and destruction?

Isaiah 29:1: “Woe to Ariel, to Ariel, the city where David dwelt!  add ye year to year; let them kill sacrifices.

2: Yet I will distress Ariel, and there shall be heaviness and sorrow: and it shall be unto me as Ariel.

3: And I will camp against thee round about, and will lay siege against thee with a mount, and I will raise forts against thee.

4: And thou shalt be brought down, and shalt speak out of the ground, and thy speech shall be low out of the dust, and thy voice shall be, as of one that hath a familiar spirit, out of the ground, and thy speech shall whisper out of the dust.

5: Moreover the multitude of thy strangers shall be like small dust, and the multitude of the terrible ones shall be as chaff that passeth away: yea, it shall be at an instant suddenly.

6: Thou shalt be visited of the LORD of hosts with thunder, and with earthquake, and great noise, with storm and tempest, and the flame of devouring fire.

7: And the multitude of all the nations that fight against Ariel, even all that fight against her and her munition, and that distress her, shall be as a dream of a night vision.

8: It shall even be as when an hungry man dreameth, and, behold, he eateth; but he awaketh, and his soul is empty: or as when a thirsty man dreameth, and, behold, he drinketh; but he awaketh, and, behold, he is faint, and his soul hath appetite: so shall the multitude of all the nations be, that fight against mount Zion.

9: Stay yourselves, and wonder; cry ye out, and cry: they are drunken, but not with wine; they stagger, but not with strong drink.

10: For the LORD hath poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep, and hath closed your eyes: the prophets and your rulers, the seers hath he covered.

11: And the vision of all is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I cannot; for it is sealed:

12: And the book is delivered to him that is not learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I am not learned.

13: Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:

14: Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.”

There is also this description of an earthquake—not literal, but spiritual:

Zecharaiah 14:1: “Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee.

2: For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city.

3: Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle.

4: And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.

5: And ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah: and the LORD my God shall come, and all the saints with thee.

6: And it shall come to pass in that day, that the light shall not be clear, nor dark:

7: But it shall be one day which shall be known to the LORD, not day, nor night: but it shall come to pass, that at evening time it shall be light.

8: And it shall be in that day, that living waters shall go out from Jerusalem; half of them toward the former sea, and half of them toward the hinder sea: in summer and in winter shall it be.

9: And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one.”

This earthquake, rather than being literal, had to do with when the living waters would flow out of Jerusalem.

John 7:37: “In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.

38: He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

39: (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)”

John 4:10: “Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

11: The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?

12: Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?

13: Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:

14: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

15: The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.”

Isaiah 2:1: “The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.

2: And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD's house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.

3: And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

Joel 3:9: “Proclaim ye this among the Gentiles; Prepare war, wake up the mighty men, let all the men of war draw near; let them come up:

10: Beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruninghooks into spears: let the weak say, I am strong.

11: Assemble yourselves, and come, all ye heathen, and gather yourselves together round about: thither cause thy mighty ones to come down, O LORD.

12: Let the heathen be wakened, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat: for there will I sit to judge all the heathen round about.

13: Put ye in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe: come, get you down; for the press is full, the fats overflow; for their wickedness is great.

14: Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision.

15: The sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining.

16: The LORD also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the LORD will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel.”

Micah 4:1: “But in the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow unto it.

2: And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.”

With the earthquake of Zechariah 14, the word of the Lord would go out of Jerusalem into the entire world, for Jew and Gentile alike, and the Lord would rule the whole world.

Luke 24:45: “Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,

46: And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:

47: And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

48: And ye are witnesses of these things.”

On the other hand, if one should desire to examine earthquakes, Italy and Europe are a hotbed of earthquakes. In fact, in 79 AD, just nine years after the fall of Jerusalem, there were terrible earthquakes associated with the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, which killed thousands in Pompeii, Herculanaeum, Oplonti, and Stabiae (STAH•bee•ay). A witness, know as Pliny the Younger, had this to say about it:

“By this time the courtyard giving access to his room was full of ashes mixed with pumice-stones, so that its level had risen, and if he had stayed in the room any longer he would never had got out. . . . They debated whether to stay indoors or take their chance in the open, for the buildings were now shaking with violent shocks, and seemed to be swaying to and fro as if they were torn from their foundations. Outside on the other hand, there was the danger of falling pumice-stones, even though these were light and porous. . . . As a protection against falling objects they put pillows on their heads tied down with cloths.” (pp. 431, 433)

“. . . the flames and smell of sulphur which gave warning of the approaching fire drove the others to take flight and roused him to stand up . . . then [he] suddenly collapsed, I imagine because the dense fumes choked his breathing by blocking his windpipe which was constitutionally weak and narrow and often inflamed . . . his body was found intact and uninjured, still fully clothed and looking more like sleep than death.” (p. 433)

“We also saw the sea sucked away and apparently forced back by the earthquake: at any rate it receded from the shore so that quantities of sea creatures were left stranded on dry sand. On the landward side a fearful black cloud was rent by forked and quivering bursts of flame, and parted to reveal great tongues of fire, like flashes of lightning magnified in size. . . . We had scarcely sat down to rest when darkness fell, not the dark of a moonless or cloudy night, but as if the lamp had been put out in a closed room. You could hear the shrieks of women, the wailing of infants, and the shouting of men; some were calling their parents, others their children or their wives, trying to recognize them by their voices. People bewailed their own fate or that of their relatives, and there were some who prayed for death in their terror of dying.” (pp. 443, 445)

These accounts have earthquakes, fire and brimstone, pestilence, the sea receding, and general death and terror, and could easily fit some of what is set forth in the Revelation. Remember that God was going to pour out His wrath upon the Jews first, and then on the Gentiles. Some of the earthquakes were felt as early as 62 AD.

Matthew 24:7: “For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.”

Rome was affected, in that the Emperor was forced to deal with the death and destruction from the early earthquakes, as well as the volcanic eruption in 79AD.

Revelation 11:14: The second woe is past; and, behold, the third woe cometh quickly.

************************************************************************

Recall from Revelation 8:13 that three woes had been pronounced, that would accompany the last three trumpet calls. The third woe is ready to be sounded with the seventh trumpet call, which is the last trump(eting). It will be worse than all those preceding woes.

************************************************************************

Revelation 11:15: And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.

************************************************************************

“The seventh angel sounded” signifies the “last trump of God.” In other words, this is the last battle call, as God finishes the wrath and anger that He is pouring out on a world of ungodliness and unrighteousness.

Matthew 24:31: “And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.”

1 Corinthians 15:50: “Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.

51: Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,

52: In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.”

1 Thessalonians 4:14: “For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.

15: For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.

16: For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

17: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.”

What was proclaimed when the seventh angel sounded? “The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord…”

Daniel 2:44: “And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.”

Daniel 7:13: “I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him.

14: And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.

15: I Daniel was grieved in my spirit in the midst of my body, and the visions of my head troubled me.

16: I came near unto one of them that stood by, and asked him the truth of all this.  So he told me, and made me know the interpretation of the things.

17: These great beasts, which are four, are four kings, which shall arise out of the earth.

18: But the saints of the most High shall take the kingdom, and possess the kingdom for ever, even for ever and ever.”

Matthew 24:30: “And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.”

Mark 9:1: “And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power.”

Matthew 16:28: “Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.”

Acts 1:6: “When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?

7: And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.

8: But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”

1 Corinthians 15:22: “For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

23: But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming.

24: Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.

25: For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.

26: The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.

27: For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith all things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him.

28: And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all.”

2 Timothy 4:1: “I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;”

John 18:36: “Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.”

The kingdom of God is a spiritual kingdom, not an earthly one.

************************************************************************

Revelation 11:16: And the four and twenty elders, which sat before God on their seats, fell upon their faces, and worshipped God,

17: Saying, We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned.

************************************************************************

Mark 13:24: “But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light,

25: And the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken.

26: And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.

27: And then shall he send his angels, and shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven.

28: Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When her branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is near:

29: So ye in like manner, when ye shall see these things come to pass, know that it is nigh, even at the doors.

30: Verily I say unto you, that this generation shall not pass, till all these things be done.”

Although the scriptures indicate that the kingdom had already come, it is also apparent that it had not yet come in full power. Now we read that the power over the nations was granted to Jesus. When did this occur? When the last trumpet sounded. Why did God allow the temple to last for about forty years after Jesus was crucified? He was giving the Jews the chance to repent, and turn to Him as their savior, before the city was destroyed.

Romans 2:3: “And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?

4: Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?

5: But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;

6: Who will render to every man according to his deeds:

7: To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:

8: But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,

9: Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;

10: But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:

11: For there is no respect of persons with God.”

2 Peter 3:3: “Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,

4: And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.

5: For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:

6: Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:

7: But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

8: But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

9: The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

10: But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.”

2 Peter 3:14: “Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.

15: And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;

16: As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.”

************************************************************************

Revelation 11:18: And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth.

************************************************************************

Notice several points included in the proclamation of the elders:

(1)   The nations were angry—why? Because their power was to be blunted by the eternal kingdom.

(2)   God’s wrath had come. The long-prophesied events were here. It is the Lord’s Day—a day of outpouring of God’s anger, His wrath, and His vengeance.

(3)   Judgment day for the dead had arrived.

(4)   The destroyers of the land would be destroyed. The Romans, who destroyed Judaea, would be destroyed.

Jeremiah 51:49: "As Babylon hath caused the slain of Israel to fall, so at Babylon shall fall the slain of all the earth."

 Regarding judgment:

Matthew 11 21: “Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

22: But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.

23: And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.

24: But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.”

Matthew 12:41: “The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.

42: The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.”

If all the earth were to be shivered into atoms at the judgment, why would the destruction of these particularly named cities be like Sodom and Gomorrah? Would not all cities and towns face the same destruction?

Revelation 11:19: And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail.

************************************************************************

Exodus 25:20: “And the cherubims shall stretch forth their wings on high, covering the mercy seat with their wings, and their faces shall look one to another; toward the mercy seat shall the faces of the cherubims be.

21: And thou shalt put the mercy seat above upon the ark; and in the ark thou shalt put the testimony that I shall give thee.

22: And there I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubims which are upon the ark of the testimony, of all things which I will give thee in commandment unto the children of Israel.”

As the ark of the covenant of the Law of Moses was kept in the tabernacle, and later, the temple, in the Old Testament, so the ark of the New Covenant is seen in the temple of God in heaven. God communicated with the children of the Old Covenant from the mercy seat above the ark of the covenant, which contained the laws of God. Now, the true ark is in the heavenly temple, and contains the eternal laws of God. From there, God communicates with us.

Hebrews 7:22: “By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament.”

Hebrews 9:14: “How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

15: And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

16: For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.

17: For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth.”

Hebrews 8:6: “But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.

7: For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.

8: For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:

9: Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.

10: For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:

11: And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.

12: For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.

13: In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.”

Cross-reference to:

Jeremiah 31:31: “Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:

32: Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:

33: But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.

34: And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD; for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”

Hebrews 10:16: “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;

17: And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.

18: Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.”

Hebrews 12:18: “For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest,

19: And the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which voice they that heard intreated that the word should not be spoken to them any more:

20: (For they could not endure that which was commanded, And if so much as a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned, or thrust through with a dart:

21: And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake:)

22: But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,

23: To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,

24: And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.

25: See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven:

26: Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven.

27: And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.

28: Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:

29: For our God is a consuming fire.”

Exodus 19:16: “And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that was in the camp trembled.

17: And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount.

18: And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly.

19: And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long, and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God answered him by a voice.

20: And the LORD came down upon mount Sinai, on the top of the mount: and the LORD called Moses up to the top of the mount; and Moses went up. 21: And the LORD said unto Moses, Go down, charge the people, lest they break through unto the LORD to gaze, and many of them perish.

22: And let the priests also, which come near to the LORD, sanctify themselves, lest the LORD break forth upon them.” Now, look at Revelation 11:19 again, where the seventh—and last—trumpet is sounding.

Revelation 11:19: “And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail.”

As in Mount Sinai, at the giving of the old covenant, there was the trumpet sound, accompanied by thunders, lightning, fire, and quaking, so it is with the arrival of the new covenant, given at Mount Zion.
