A Study of Revelation Chapter 21:1-27

Revelation 21:1: And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. ************************************************************************

Once again, this is a quotation from an Old Testament prophecy. In fact, it is the fulfilling of that prophecy, which is found in Isaiah chapters 42, 43, 65, and 66.

 

Isaiah 42:1: “Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.

2: He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street.

3: A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth.

4: He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law.

5: Thus saith God the LORD, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein:

6: I the LORD have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles;

7: To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house.

8: I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.

9: Behold, the former things are come to pass, and new things do I declare: before they spring forth I tell you of them.”

 

Isaiah 43:18: “Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old.

19: Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it?  I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

20: The beast of the field shall honour me, the dragons and the owls: because I give waters in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert, to give drink to my people, my chosen.

21: This people have I formed for myself; they shall shew forth my praise.

22: But thou hast not called upon me, O Jacob; but thou hast been weary of me, O Israel.

23: Thou hast not brought me the small cattle of thy burnt offerings; neither hast thou honoured me with thy sacrifices.  I have not caused thee to serve with an offering, nor wearied thee with incense.

24: Thou hast bought me no sweet cane with money, neither hast thou filled me with the fat of thy sacrifices: but thou hast made me to serve with thy sins, thou hast wearied me with thine iniquities.

25: I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins.”

 

This is actually a prophecy about the end of the Law of Moses, and about the preaching of the gospel. The former way of things passes, and new things are declared.

 

Isaiah 65:1: “I am sought of them that asked not for me; I am found of them that sought me not: I said, Behold me, behold me, unto a nation that was not called by my name.

2: I have spread out my hands all the day unto a rebellious people, which walketh in a way that was not good, after their own thoughts;

3: A people that provoketh me to anger continually to my face; that sacrificeth in gardens, and burneth incense upon altars of brick;

4: Which remain among the graves, and lodge in the monuments, which eat swine's flesh, and broth of abominable things is in their vessels;

5: Which say, Stand by thyself, come not near to me; for I am holier than thou.  These are a smoke in my nose, a fire that burneth all the day.

6: Behold, it is written before me: I will not keep silence, but will recompense, even recompense into their bosom,

7: Your iniquities, and the iniquities of your fathers together, saith the LORD, which have burned incense upon the mountains, and blasphemed me upon the hills: therefore will I measure their former work into their bosom.

8: Thus saith the LORD, As the new wine is found in the cluster, and one saith, Destroy it not; for a blessing is in it: so will I do for my servants' sakes, that I may not destroy them all.

9: And I will bring forth a seed out of Jacob, and out of Judah an inheritor of my mountains: and mine elect shall inherit it, and my servants shall dwell there.

10: And Sharon shall be a fold of flocks, and the valley of Achor a place for the herds to lie down in, for my people that have sought me.

11: But ye are they that forsake the LORD, that forget my holy mountain, that prepare a table for that troop, and that furnish the drink offering unto that number.

12: Therefore will I number you to the sword, and ye shall all bow down to the slaughter: because when I called, ye did not answer; when I spake, ye did not hear; but did evil before mine eyes, and did choose that wherein I delighted not.

13: Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, my servants shall eat, but ye shall be hungry: behold, my servants shall drink, but ye shall be thirsty: behold, my servants shall rejoice, but ye shall be ashamed:

14: Behold, my servants shall sing for joy of heart, but ye shall cry for sorrow of heart, and shall howl for vexation of spirit.

15: And ye shall leave your name for a curse unto my chosen: for the Lord GOD shall slay thee, and call his servants by another name:

16: That he who blesseth himself in the earth shall bless himself in the God of truth; and he that sweareth in the earth shall swear by the God of truth; because the former troubles are forgotten, and because they are hid from mine eyes.

17: For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.

18: But be ye glad and rejoice for ever in that which I create: for, behold, I create Jerusalem a rejoicing, and her people a joy.

19: And I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and joy in my people: and the voice of weeping shall be no more heard in her, nor the voice of crying.

20: There shall be no more thence an infant of days, nor an old man that hath not filled his days: for the child shall die an hundred years old; but the sinner being an hundred years old shall be accursed.

21: And they shall build houses, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of them.

22: They shall not build, and another inhabit; they shall not plant, and another eat: for as the days of a tree are the days of my people, and mine elect shall long enjoy the work of their hands.

23: They shall not labour in vain, nor bring forth for trouble; for they are the seed of the blessed of the LORD, and their offspring with them.

24: And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.

25: The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, and the lion shall eat straw like the bullock: and dust shall be the serpent's meat.  They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain, saith the LORD.”

 

Isaiah 66:1:”Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me?  and where is the place of my rest?

2: For all those things hath mine hand made, and those things have been, saith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.

3: He that killeth an ox is as if he slew a man; he that sacrificeth a lamb, as if he cut off a dog's neck; he that offereth an oblation, as if he offered swine's blood; he that burneth incense, as if he blessed an idol.  Yea, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delighteth in their abominations.

4: I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spake, they did not hear: but they did evil before mine eyes, and chose that in which I delighted not.

5: Hear the word of the LORD, ye that tremble at his word; your brethren that hated you, that cast you out for my name's sake, said, Let the LORD be glorified: but he shall appear to your joy, and they shall be ashamed.

6: A voice of noise from the city, a voice from the temple, a voice of the LORD that rendereth recompence to his enemies.

7: Before she travailed, she brought forth; before her pain came, she was delivered of a man child.

8: Who hath heard such a thing?  who hath seen such things?  Shall the earth be made to bring forth in one day?  or shall a nation be born at once?  for as soon as Zion travailed, she brought forth her children.

9: Shall I bring to the birth, and not cause to bring forth?  saith the LORD: shall I cause to bring forth, and shut the womb?  saith thy God.

10: Rejoice ye with Jerusalem, and be glad with her, all ye that love her: rejoice for joy with her, all ye that mourn for her:

11: That ye may suck, and be satisfied with the breasts of her consolations; that ye may milk out, and be delighted with the abundance of her glory.

12: For thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river, and the glory of the Gentiles like a flowing stream: then shall ye suck, ye shall be borne upon her sides, and be dandled upon her knees.

13: As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you; and ye shall be comforted in Jerusalem.

14: And when ye see this, your heart shall rejoice, and your bones shall flourish like an herb: and the hand of the LORD shall be known toward his servants, and his indignation toward his enemies.

15: For, behold, the LORD will come with fire, and with his chariots like a whirlwind, to render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire.

16: For by fire and by his sword will the LORD plead with all flesh: and the slain of the LORD shall be many.

17: They that sanctify themselves, and purify themselves in the gardens behind one tree in the midst, eating swine's flesh, and the abomination, and the mouse, shall be consumed together, saith the LORD.

18: For I know their works and their thoughts: it shall come, that I will gather all nations and tongues; and they shall come, and see my glory.

19: And I will set a sign among them, and I will send those that escape of them unto the nations, to Tarshish, Pul, and Lud, that draw the bow, to Tubal, and Javan, to the isles afar off, that have not heard my fame, neither have seen my glory; and they shall declare my glory among the Gentiles.

20: And they shall bring all your brethren for an offering unto the LORD out of all nations upon horses, and in chariots, and in litters, and upon mules, and upon swift beasts, to my holy mountain Jerusalem, saith the LORD, as the children of Israel bring an offering in a clean vessel into the house of the LORD.

21: And I will also take of them for priests and for Levites, saith the LORD.

22: For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain.

23: And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD.

24: And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcases of the men that have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.”

 

Haggai 2:6: “For thus saith the LORD of hosts; Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land;

7: And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the LORD of hosts.

8: The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the LORD of hosts.

9: The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the LORD of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the LORD of hosts.”

 

For cross-reference, note the following (realizing that the apostles preached from the Old Testament scriptures, and were constantly quoting from them):

 

Hebrews 12:22: “But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,

23: To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,

24: And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.

25: See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven:

26: Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven.

27: And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.

28: Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:

29: For our God is a consuming fire.”

 

2 Corinthians 5:17: “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

 

Ephesians 4:24: “And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.”

 

Hebrews 8:6:”But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.

7: For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.

8: For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:

9: Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.

10: For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:

11: And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.

12: For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.

13: In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.”

 

Matthew 12:17: “That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,

18: Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles.

19: He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets.

20: A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory.

21: And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.”

 

2 Peter 3:1: “This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance:

2: That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour:

3: Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,

4: And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.

5: For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:

6: Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:

7: But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

8: But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

9: The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

10: But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

11: Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,

12: Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?

13: Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.”

 

2 Thessalonians 2:1: “Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,

2: That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.

3: Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

4: Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

5: Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things?

6: And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.

7: For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.

8: And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:

9: Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,

10: And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

11: And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:

12: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.”

 

Mark 9: 43: “And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:

44: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

45: And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:

46: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

47: And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire:

48: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.”

 

The apostles plainly understood the Old Testament prophecies to be referring to the establishing of the kingdom of God, the coming of the Messiah (Christ), the passing away of the Law of Moses, and the righteousness that comes from obeying Jesus.

 

With the utter destruction of the temple, Jerusalem, and Judaea, the old ways passed away forever. The old covenant was replaced with the new covenant. God chose to forget the former world, the way things were under the Law of Moses. Instead, under Christ, the new world came to be—a world in which righteousness was firmly established in the ekklesia–the church. Old things had passed away, and all things became new.

 

As for the sea, we have earlier studied in the book of Revelation that sea often referred to the peoples of the earth—the Gentiles. Truly, once Jesus died to make of all men one nation, the sea vanished. That is to say, instead of the Jews and the sea of peoples, there was now unity in one body in Christ Jesus.

 

1 Corinthians 12:13: “For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.”

 

Ephesians 2:11: “Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands;

12: That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:

13: But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

14: For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;

15: Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;

16: And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:

17: And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh.”

Revelation 21:2: And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. ************************************************************************

What is the New Jerusalem? It is spiritual, and not the literal city of old Jerusalem. The best clue to the answer is found in the description of the city “as a bride adorned for her husband”.

The relationship of the ekklesia (church, or called out assembly) to Christ is compared to that of a wife to her husband, in Ephesians chapter 5.

 

Ephesians 5:22: “Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.

23: For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.

24: Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.

25: Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

26: That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

27: That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

28: So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.

29: For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:

30: For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.

31: For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.

32: This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.”

 

Revelation 19:7: “Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.”

 

God set the ekklesia upon the earth to be the pure and holy bride of Christ.

Revelation 21:3: And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.

This is a quotation from:

 

Ezekiel 37:21: “And say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will take the children of Israel from among the heathen, whither they be gone, and will gather them on every side, and bring them into their own land:

22: And I will make them one nation in the land upon the mountains of Israel; and one king shall be king to them all: and they shall be no more two nations, neither shall they be divided into two kingdoms any more at all:

23: Neither shall they defile themselves any more with their idols, nor with their detestable things, nor with any of their transgressions: but I will save them out of all their dwellingplaces, wherein they have sinned, and will cleanse them: so shall they be my people, and I will be their God.

24: And David my servant shall be king over them; and they all shall have one shepherd: they shall also walk in my judgments, and observe my statutes, and do them.

25: And they shall dwell in the land that I have given unto Jacob my servant, wherein your fathers have dwelt; and they shall dwell therein, even they, and their children, and their children's children for ever: and my servant David shall be their prince for ever.

26: Moreover I will make a covenant of peace with them; it shall be an everlasting covenant with them: and I will place them, and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary in the midst of them for evermore.

27: My tabernacle also shall be with them: yea, I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

28: And the heathen shall know that I the LORD do sanctify Israel, when my sanctuary shall be in the midst of them for evermore.”

 

When the ekklesia was firmly planted on the earth, after the temple in Jerusalem was destroyed and Judah carried away captive, the tabernacle of God was with men. A tabernacle is a tent, and was used as a portable place of worship by the Israelites in the wilderness. The ekklesia is the portable place of worship by Christians on earth. Wherever Christians go, they are the church, and worship God from wherever they are.

 

2 Corinthians 6:16: “And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.”

 

The church is the tabernacle of God, and the bride of Christ. It came down from God, out of heaven, to the earth.

Revelation 21:4: And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

5: And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful. ************************************************************************

 

The tears are wiped away, because the former ways are put behind us, and the new way is upon us. Where once there was no remission of sin, now there is. Fear of death is gone, because we have the promise of eternal life, and we know that Jesus was resurrected from the dead. Knowing that, we know that we can be resurrected to eternal life, as well. With the hope of this eternal life, we are able to rejoice even when tribulations are upon us.

 

Isaiah 25:6: “And in this mountain shall the LORD of hosts make unto all people a feast of fat things, a feast of wines on the lees, of fat things full of marrow, of wines on the lees well refined.

7: And he will destroy in this mountain the face of the covering cast over all people, and the vail that is spread over all nations.

8: He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the LORD hath spoken it.

9: And it shall be said in that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, and he will save us: this is the LORD; we have waited for him, we will be glad and rejoice in his salvation.”

 

1 Corinthians 15:49: “And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.

50: Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.

51: Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,

52: In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

53: For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.

54: So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.

55: O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?

56: The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.

57: But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

 

Jeremiah 31:15: “Thus saith the LORD; A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping; Rachel weeping for her children refused to be comforted for her children, because they were not.

16: Thus saith the LORD; Refrain thy voice from weeping, and thine eyes from tears: for thy work shall be rewarded, saith the LORD; and they shall come again from the land of the enemy.”

 

Matthew 2:17: “Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying,

18: In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.”

 

Hebrews 2:14: “Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

15: And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.”

 

2 Timothy 1:10: “But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:”

 

Romans 6:8: “Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:

9: Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.

10: For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.

11: Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

 

Romans 6:22: “But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.

23: For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

 

Romans 7: 24: “O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

25: I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.”

 

Romans 8:6: “For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.”

 

1 Peter 1:3: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

4: To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,

5: Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

6: Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations:

7: That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:

8: Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:

9: Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.”

 

The tears are to be dried, because of the reward that comes from the Lord, even our salvation, which salvation is in Jesus Christ. We have the victory in Jesus, over death and the grave, so that we can rejoice, even in our troubles. The flesh shall die, but since flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom, that is a small thing. We shall abide forever in the presence of the Lord.

 

Luke 6:22: “Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake.

23: Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets.”

 

John 16:20: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.

21: A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.

22: And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.”

 

Acts 20:24: “But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.”

 

2 Corinthians 7:4: “Great is my boldness of speech toward you, great is my glorying of you: I am filled with comfort, I am exceeding joyful in all our tribulation.”

 

Hebrews 12:2: “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

 

Behold! He has made all things new!

Revelation 21:6: And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. ************************************************************************

 

The great mystery is finished, God’s plan is done. The old covenant has been replaced by the new one, and the Law of Moses has been fulfilled and taken out of the way so that the freedom that is in Christ may reign. The love of God and the blood of Jesus have replaced the law of the blood of bulls and goats. God is the beginning and the end, the first and the last, for those who walk in Him, and live in righteousness. He created us, and now Jesus has reconciled us to Him who created us. The fountain of life exists in the words that Jesus delivered to us from His Father.

 

Jeremiah 2:11: “Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods?  but my people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit.

12: Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and be horribly afraid, be ye very desolate, saith the LORD.

13: For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.”

 

Jeremiah 17:5: “Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD.

6: For he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh; but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land and not inhabited.

7: Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is.

8: For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.

9: The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

10: I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.

11: As the partridge sitteth on eggs, and hatcheth them not; so he that getteth riches, and not by right, shall leave them in the midst of his days, and at his end shall be a fool.

12: A glorious high throne from the beginning is the place of our sanctuary.

13: O LORD, the hope of Israel, all that forsake thee shall be ashamed, and they that depart from me shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken the LORD, the fountain of living waters.

Zechariah 14:1: “Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee.

2: For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city.

3: Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle.

4: And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.

5: And ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah: and the LORD my God shall come, and all the saints with thee.

6: And it shall come to pass in that day, that the light shall not be clear, nor dark:

7: But it shall be one day which shall be known to the LORD, not day, nor night: but it shall come to pass, that at evening time it shall be light.

8: And it shall be in that day, that living waters shall go out from Jerusalem; half of them toward the former sea, and half of them toward the hinder sea: in summer and in winter shall it be.

9: And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one.”

 

John 4:10: “Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

11: The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?

12: Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?

13: Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:

14: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

 

Zechariah 13:1: “In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness.

2: And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD of hosts, that I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they shall no more be remembered: and also I will cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to pass out of the land.

3: And it shall come to pass, that when any shall yet prophesy, then his father and his mother that begat him shall say unto him, Thou shalt not live; for thou speakest lies in the name of the LORD: and his father and his mother that begat him shall thrust him through when he prophesieth.

4: And it shall come to pass in that day, that the prophets shall be ashamed every one of his vision, when he hath prophesied; neither shall they wear a rough garment to deceive:

5: But he shall say, I am no prophet, I am an husbandman; for man taught me to keep cattle from my youth.

6: And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands?  Then he shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.

7: Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the LORD of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered: and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones.

8: And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the LORD, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein.

9: And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The LORD is my God.”

 

Matthew 24:14: “And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.”

 

Mark 16:15: “And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.”

 

Acts 11:16: “Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.

17: Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God?

18: When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.

19: Now they which were scattered abroad upon the persecution that arose about Stephen travelled as far as Phenice, and Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to none but unto the Jews only.

20: And some of them were men of Cyprus and Cyrene, which, when they were come to Antioch, spake unto the Grecians, preaching the Lord Jesus.

21: And the hand of the Lord was with them: and a great number believed, and turned unto the Lord.”

 

Matthew 5:6: “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.”

 

The gospel was preached among all nations, that is, throughout the Roman Empire. Gentiles came willingly into the kingdom of God. The living waters flowed out of Jerusalem into the entire world!

18: And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.”

 

Galatians 4:4: “But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,

5: To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

6: And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

7: Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.”

 

1 John 2:13: “I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father.”

 

1 John 2:14: “I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.”

 

1 John 4:4: “Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”

 

1 John 5:4: “For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.”

 

1 John 5:5: “Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?”

 

Colossians 1:10: “That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;

11: Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness;

12: Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:

13: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:

14: In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:”

Christians are the sons and daughters of God. They overcome sin by faith in Jesus Christ. That is to say, because of their faith, and their hope, they walk in righteousness. The faithful are promised to inherit the kingdom of God, by obtaining salvation through the forgiveness of sins, and the promise of eternal life.

Revelation 21:8: But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. ************************************************************************

 

To die means to be cut off. The first death is the death of the flesh, in which the dead are cut off from loved ones in this world. The second death is eternal death, in which souls are eternally cut off from the presence of God.

 

Genesis 2:17: “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.”

 

Genesis 3:4: “And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:”

 

Genesis 3:22: “And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:

23: Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.

24: So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.”

 

Isaiah 52:1: “Awake, awake; put on thy strength, O Zion; put on thy beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city: for henceforth there shall no more come into thee the uncircumcised and the unclean.

2: Shake thyself from the dust; arise, and sit down, O Jerusalem: loose thyself from the bands of thy neck, O captive daughter of Zion.

3: For thus saith the LORD, Ye have sold yourselves for nought; and ye shall be redeemed without money.

4: For thus saith the Lord GOD, My people went down aforetime into Egypt to sojourn there; and the Assyrian oppressed them without cause.

5: Now therefore, what have I here, saith the LORD, that my people is taken away for nought?  they that rule over them make them to howl, saith the LORD; and my name continually every day is blasphemed.

6: Therefore my people shall know my name: therefore they shall know in that day that I am he that doth speak: behold, it is I.

7: How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!

8: Thy watchmen shall lift up the voice; with the voice together shall they sing: for they shall see eye to eye, when the LORD shall bring again Zion.

9: Break forth into joy, sing together, ye waste places of Jerusalem: for the LORD hath comforted his people, he hath redeemed Jerusalem.

10: The LORD hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.

11: Depart ye, depart ye, go ye out from thence, touch no unclean thing; go ye out of the midst of her; be ye clean, that bear the vessels of the LORD.

12: For ye shall not go out with haste, nor go by flight: for the LORD will go before you; and the God of Israel will be your reward.

13: Behold, my servant shall deal prudently, he shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high.

14: As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men:

15: So shall he sprinkle many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at him: for that which had not been told them shall they see; and that which they had not heard shall they consider.”

 

1 Corinthians 6:9: “Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,

10: Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.”

 

Galatians 5:19: “Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

20: Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

21: Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.”

 

Ephesians 5:3: “But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;

4: Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.

5: For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

6: Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.”

 

The unrighteous will be cut off from God eternally. The lake of fire and brimstone signifies this eternal cutting off of the unrighteous. These unrighteous cannot inherit the kingdom of God! They are destined for eternal destruction.

 

2 Thessalonians 1:9: “Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;”

 

Jude 12: “These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;

13: Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever.”

Revelation 21:9: And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb's wife.

10: And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, ************************************************************************

 

The Lamb’s wife is the ekklesia, the called-out assembly. The holy Jerusalem came from God in heaven, down to mankind on the earth, replacing the old Jerusalem. The ekklesia is the seat of God’s power on the earth. It is the bride and the body of Christ.

Revelation 21:11: Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal;

12: And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel:

13: On the east three gates; on the north three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates.

14: And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. ************************************************************************

 

The Law and the prophets opened into the city, and the apostles are the foundation under it. This is clearly describing the ekklesia, or called-out assembly, which we call the church. Jesus Christ is the chief cornerstone, to which all the foundation stones are aligned. We Christians are living stones in this holy city of God. Compare to:

 

Ezekiel 48:31: “And the gates of the city shall be after the names of the tribes of Israel: three gates northward; one gate of Reuben, one gate of Judah, one gate of Levi.

32: And at the east side four thousand and five hundred: and three gates; and one gate of Joseph, one gate of Benjamin, one gate of Dan.

33: And at the south side four thousand and five hundred measures: and three gates; one gate of Simeon, one gate of Issachar, one gate of Zebulun.

34: At the west side four thousand and five hundred, with their three gates; one gate of Gad, one gate of Asher, one gate of Naphtali.

35: It was round about eighteen thousand measures: and the name of the city from that day shall be, The LORD is there.”

 

As the gates of the old city of Jerusalem bore the names of the twelve sons of Israel, the twelve families that sprang from Jacob, so shall the gates to the new, spiritual Jerusalem bear the names of the twelve tribes.

 

Ephesians 2:10: “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

11: Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands;

12: That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:

13: But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

14: For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;

15: Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;

16: And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:

17: And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh.

18: For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.

19: Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;

20: And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;

21: In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:

22: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.”

 

1 Peter 2:4: “To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,

5: Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

6: Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.

7: Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,

8: And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.

9: But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

10: Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.”

Revelation 21:15: And he that talked with me had a golden reed to measure the city, and the gates thereof, and the wall thereof.

16: And the city lieth foursquare, and the length is as large as the breadth: and he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs. The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal.

17: And he measured the wall thereof, an hundred and forty and four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel.

18: And the building of the wall of it was of jasper: and the city was pure gold, like unto clear glass.

19: And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, an emerald;

20: The fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolite; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, a topaz; the tenth, a chrysoprasus; the eleventh, a jacinth; the twelfth, an amethyst.

21: And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass. ************************************************************************

 

The old temple was destroyed, and the new, spiritual temple—the church—has taken its place. Remember how the disciples were amazed at the wonderful stones of the physical temple in the physical Jerusalem?

 

Mark 13:1: “And as he went out of the temple, one of his disciples saith unto him, Master, see what manner of stones and what buildings are here!

2: And Jesus answering said unto him, Seest thou these great buildings? there shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.”

 

1 Peter 2:5: “Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ..”

 

1 Corinthians 3:16: “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?”

 

1 Corinthians 3:17: “If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.”

 

1 Corinthians 6:19: “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?”

 

The huge, beautiful stones of the physical temple were thrown down. However, that temple was replaced with a beautiful, spiritual temple that is even greater. The wonderful believers in God, those righteous men who obey Him, adorn the new temple of God that He had sent down from heaven to be with men! This new Jerusalem has the appearance of transparent gold, that is, gold that looks like glass.

 

Notice also that the stones that represent the apostles as the foundation correspond to the stones that represented the twelve tribes in the ephod of the High Priest of the Old Testament.

Matthew 17:10: “And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come?

11: And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things.

12: But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them.

13: Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist.”

 

When Jesus came to establish the ekklesia, the light of God was given to the righteous.

 

Joshn 1:1: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2: The same was in the beginning with God.

3: All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

4: In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

5: And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

6: There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

7: The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.

8: He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

9: That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

10: He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.

11: He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

12: But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

13: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

14: And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

15: John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.

John 8:12: “Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”

 

John 9:5: “As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

 

2 Corinthians 4:6: ‘For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

 

God the Father, and Jesus Christ, our Savior, are the light of the true temple of God. The light of God through Jesus Christ lives within us, making us the light of the world, in the place of Jesus. Remember that we are the bride of Christ, His body upon the earth.

 

Matthew 5:14: “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

15: Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

16: Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

Acts 15:14: “Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name.

16: After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up:

17: That the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord, who doeth all these things.”

 

Under the Law of Moses, the gates of the city were not spiritually open to the Gentiles. As the gospel was preached among the Gentiles, they were added to the ekklesia. The gates were not shut to anyone seeking righteousness! Over time, even the Roman Emperors turned from paganism and the worship of idol gods, to serve the true and the living God of heaven and earth.

 

Acts 10:34: ”Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:

35: But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.”

 

Romans 2:6: “Who will render to every man according to his deeds:

7: To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:

8: But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,

9: Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;

10: But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:

11: For there is no respect of persons with God.”

 

1 Peter 1:17: “And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear:”

 

The gates to the city of God are open to anyone who will come in righteousness.

Daniel 12:1: “And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.

2: And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.

3: And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.”

 

Psalms 69:24: “Pour out thine indignation upon them, and let thy wrathful anger take hold of them.

25: Let their habitation be desolate; and let none dwell in their tents.

26: For they persecute him whom thou hast smitten; and they talk to the grief of those whom thou hast wounded.

27: Add iniquity unto their iniquity: and let them not come into thy righteousness.

28: Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, and not be written with the righteous.

29: But I am poor and sorrowful: let thy salvation, O God, set me up on high.”

 

The book of life is the book of the living, or the righteous. Those who follow God, who obey Him, are written in the book of the living. The unrighteous are not written in the Lamb’s book of life, and will be cut off from God eternally.

 

Under the old Law of Moses, Israel and Judah laid claim to being the people of God. Yet, for all their claims, they went after the idol gods of the lands about them. The old Jerusalem was corrupted by the idol worship. This new Jerusalem, wherein dwells righteousness, will not be tainted by the abominable and the unbelieving. They cannot enter into this spiritual city of God.
