Burial and Resurrection May 08, 2016 When Jesus was crucified, He was buried in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathaea. He was resurrected after three days, as He had prophesied. He was seen of, and taught, His apostles for forty days. He was seen by over five hundred men at one time. His disciples watched Him ascend into the sky in a cloud. - Bernie Parsons |

Burial and Resurrection

We have studied the betrayal and crucifixion of Jesus. We have also
examined His humiliation and death on the cross, falsely convicted of
being a criminal, an insurgent against Rome. Now, let us take a deeper
look at the burial and resurrection of Jesus, and what it means to us.
39 But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation
seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the
sign of the prophet Jonas:
40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so
shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the
earth.
41 The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and
shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and,
behold, a greater than Jonas is here.
42 The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this
generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts
of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than
Solomon is here."
Remember how some false witnesses said that He claimed that He could
tear down the temple in Jerusalem and build it back again? He spoke of
His body as the temple of God.
Mark 8:31 "And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer
many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests,
and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again."
John 2:18 "Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest
thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things?
19 Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three
days I will raise it up.
20 Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building,
and wilt thou rear it up in three days?
21 But he spake of the temple of his body.
22 When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered
that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and
the word which Jesus had said."
When He was to be buried, the Jewish “church” leaders claimed that His
disciples would steal His body and pretend that He had been resurrected
from the dead.
Matthew 27:62 "Now the next day, that followed the day of the
preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate,
63 Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet
alive, After three days I will rise again.
64 Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third
day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto
the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse
than the first."
Joseph of Arimathaea took the body of Jesus and buried it in his own
personal tomb.
Matthew 27:57 "When the even was come, there came a rich man of
Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple:
58 He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate
commanded the body to be delivered.
59 And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen
cloth,
60 And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock:
and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.
61 And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over
against the sepulchre.
62 Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief
priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate,
63 Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet
alive, After three days I will rise again.
64 Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third
day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto
the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse
than the first.
65 Pilate said unto them,
Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can.
66 So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and
setting a watch."
After Jesus was resurrected from the dead, He was seen by hundreds of
witnesses.
Acts 1:1 "The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that
Jesus began both to do and teach,
2 Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy
Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen:
3 To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many
infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the
things pertaining to the kingdom of God:
4 And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they
should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the
Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me."
Acts 13:29 "And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him,
they took him down from the tree, and laid him in a sepulchre.
30 But God raised him from the dead:
31 And he was seen many days of them which came up with him from Galilee
to Jerusalem, who are his witnesses unto the people."
1 Corinthians 15:3 "For I delivered unto you first of all that which I
also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the
scriptures;
4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according
to the scriptures:
5 And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve:
6 After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of
whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen
asleep.
7 After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. 8 And last
of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time."
His disciples watched Him ascend into heaven in a cloud.
Acts 1:9 "And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was
taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
10 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold,
two men stood by them in white apparel;
11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into
heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall
so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven."
The devout followers of Jesus are also promised a resurrection from the
dead.
John 11:21 "Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here,
my brother had not died.
22 But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will
give it thee.
23 Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.
24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the
resurrection at the last day.
25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that
believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest
thou this?
27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ,
the Son of God, which should come into the world."
John 5:28 "Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all
that are in the graves shall hear his voice,
29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection
of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of
damnation."
First we must take part in another resurrection – achieved through
baptism in water.
Colossians 2:12 "Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen
with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him
from the dead."
Romans 6:3 "Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus
Christ were baptized into his death?
4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as
Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so
we also should walk in newness of life.
5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we
shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: 6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin."
